A Well-Established, Widely Respected Tradition

Complex noun phrases — pre- and post-modification. Leo drafts a grant application; Maya counts twelve words of noun phrase before the first verb and tells him that's exactly right.

📖 Reading: The Grant Application

Leo had been encouraged by Elena to apply for a small business development grant.

He was writing the opening paragraph.

"Café Colibri is a community-centred, award-winning independent café located in the heart of downtown Toronto, serving a diverse and growing neighbourhood population."

"That's twelve words of noun phrase," said Maya, reading over his shoulder. "Before you get to the verb."

"Is that too much?"

"It's exactly right for a grant application. Let's keep going."

"The café's founding vision — to create a space for genuine human connection in an increasingly transactional urban environment — has guided every decision made since opening."

"Founding vision in dashes," said Maya. "Nice. And 'increasingly transactional urban environment' — that's three pre-modifiers."

"Is that allowed?"

"In a grant application? Not only allowed — expected."

"The café's community outreach programme, which is currently in its second year of operation, has reached over five hundred participants from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds."

"Post-modification via relative clause," said Maya. "You're getting good at this."

"I had a good teacher," said Leo.

"You had good coffee," said Maya. "Which is arguably the same thing."

🎭 Dialogue: Build the Noun Phrase

Maya coaches Leo through expanding a bare noun into a grant-application sentence. Each addition tightens the description without breaking the grammar.

Maya

"A café." Can you expand that?

Leo

"A local café."

Maya

More.

Leo

"A locally-owned, community-centred café."

Maya

Add a post-modifier.

Leo

"A locally-owned, community-centred café located in downtown Toronto."

Maya

One more.

Leo

"A locally-owned, community-centred café located in downtown Toronto, serving a diverse neighbourhood population."

Maya

That's a grant application sentence. You're ready.
