It Might Well Have Been Otherwise
Modal complexity — layered and nuanced modal use. Jess writes a long-form piece about chance and turning points: a single phone call in October that might never have been made — but was.
📖 Reading: The Counterfactual
Jess had been writing a long-form piece about the role of chance in career trajectories.
"Consider," she wrote, "a single phone call made in October. Had I not made that call, Café Colibri might never have had its most loyal morning customer. Maya might well have remained in Taipei. Leo's café might conceivably have followed a different path entirely."
"These are not merely hypothetical observations. They are a reminder that what we call 'career' or 'community' could well have been otherwise — shaped by a different set of small decisions."
"The call was not strategic. It may not even have been conscious. I saw a brief. I was struck by it. I called. What might have been merely a professional exchange became, in ways I could not then have foreseen, the beginning of something else."
"This may well be true of most of the things we call turning points. They may not have seemed significant at the time. They might have been otherwise. They weren't."
"And that," concluded Jess, "might just be enough."
Maya read the piece twice.
"You might have told me you were writing this," she said.
"You might have asked," said Jess.
"Fair point," said Maya. "It's beautifully written, by the way."
"It might be," said Jess. "I'm never entirely sure."

🎭 Dialogue: What Might Have Been
Maya asks Jess to imagine what would have happened if she hadn't made the call. The answers come in layered modals — 'might well', 'could conceivably', 'could not have foreseen'.
If you hadn't called me, where do you think I'd be?
You might well have stayed in Taipei. Or you might have found another opportunity.
I could conceivably have ended up somewhere completely different.
It could well have been otherwise. But it wasn't.
Do you think you knew what would happen?
I could not then have foreseen any of it. I just saw a good brief.
You might not have even noticed it.
That thought is genuinely terrifying.

Add 'well' to strengthen the possibility: 'She might have changed her mind.'
Add 'well' to strengthen the possibility: 'This could affect the outcome.'
Add 'conceivably' to distance the possibility: 'He may have known.'
🎭 Now It's Your Turn — Role Play
Practice with a partner. Use the dialogue as a model and extend it.
- Student A: Describe a turning point in your life and explore the alternatives using layered modal structures.
- Student B: Ask: might it have been otherwise? What could conceivably have happened instead? Could you have foreseen this?
- Use at least: might well / could conceivably / may not have been / could not have foreseen.
- Then swap. Focus on the nuance of certainty — not just the grammar.
