You're Ready for B2

B1 full review and celebration. Two years in Toronto have changed Maya — she thinks in English sometimes, makes people laugh without trying, and is ready for B2. The capstone lesson for everything you've learned at B1.

📖 Reading: Two Years in Toronto

Maya has been in Toronto for two years.

A lot has changed. When she arrived, she hadn't known a single person. She had been so nervous that she rehearsed her coffee order. She couldn't have imagined that the barista would become her closest friend.

Now, she can discuss climate change, explain a design process, express regret with nuance, give directions, tell a joke, and comfort someone in English. Last week, she said something that made everyone laugh — and she hadn't even been trying to be funny.

"That's fluency," said Jess, who was visiting. "Not being perfect. Being natural."

She has started thinking in English sometimes. Not always. But more than she expected.

"If you hadn't come to Toronto," she told Leo one evening, "I wouldn't have had any of this."

"If I hadn't opened the café," said Leo, "I wouldn't be standing here."

"We should all be grateful for the things that scared us," said Omar.

Maya looked around the café — the candle Leo kept on the counter, the table by the window where Omar studied, the corner booth that Priya and Jess always chose.

"I wish I could bottle this," she said.

"It's already in you," said Leo. "You've been collecting it all along."

"On to B2," said Maya.

"On to B2," they all said.

🎭 Dialogue: Two Years On

Maya and Leo trade what they would say to their younger, more nervous selves. They land on the same conclusion: be grateful for the things that scared you.

Leo

Maya, you've been here two years. How do you feel in English now?

Maya

Natural. Sometimes. I've started thinking in English, which surprised me.

Leo

Do you remember rehearsing your coffee order?

Maya

I could have died! I had been repeating it since 7 AM.

Leo

And now you give design presentations on podcasts.

Maya

If you hadn't given me that list of shops on my first day, who knows?

Leo

If you hadn't come in that morning, I wouldn't have a first regular.

Maya

So we should both be grateful for the things that scared us.
