Reading Between the Lines
Reading strategies — inference, implication, text analysis. A three-star review of Café Colibri tells Leo less about his coffee and more about what the reviewer felt.
📖 Reading: An Unexpected Review
Three stars. That was the rating Café Colibri received from an anonymous online reviewer two weeks after the award.
"The coffee is technically impressive, but the atmosphere feels calculated. It tries too hard to be cosy. The staff are friendly — possibly too friendly. This place knows it's good, and it shows."
Leo read it twice. Then he put down his phone and made himself a cortado.
"What does it say?" asked Maya, who had been watching him.
"Three stars. They say I try too hard to be cosy."
Maya read it. "This isn't really about the coffee, is it?"
"No," said Leo. "I think what they're really saying is that they felt uncomfortable. Like they didn't fit in."
"That's a generous reading," said Maya.
"Or maybe," said Leo, "they're right. Maybe I've made it too much of a community space and not enough of a… neutral café."
"Is that a bad thing?" asked Maya.
"I'm not sure," said Leo. "But I don't think three stars from someone who felt excluded tells me I'm doing something wrong."
"And five stars from someone who felt included?" said Maya.
"Tells me exactly what I'm doing right," said Leo.

🎭 Dialogue: What Do You Think They Really Mean?
Maya and Leo dissect the review line by line. The question becomes less 'is it fair?' and more 'what is the reviewer really telling us about themselves?'
Let me read it again. "The staff are possibly too friendly."
What does that even mean?
I think it implies they felt overwhelmed. Or maybe out of place.
So the friendliness was the problem?
Or it wasn't what they expected from a café. They wanted something neutral.
We can infer they prefer a certain type of urban café experience.
Exactly. Cold, minimal, no eye contact.
I can't help being warm. It's no use trying to change that.

- Student A: Write a short review (4–5 sentences) of a real or imaginary place. Include some implied meaning.
- Student B: Analyse the review: What does it actually say? What does it imply? What is the tone?
- Discuss: do you agree with each other's interpretations? Is one reading more 'generous' than another?
