If I Had Studied Medicine, I Would Be a Doctor Now

Mixed conditionals — combining past and present. A journalist interviews the group; one by one, they trace the past decisions that made them who they are today.

📖 Reading: Different Paths

A journalist from a language magazine is writing about people who have moved to new countries to study or work.

"If I hadn't come to Canada," says Maya, "I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you right now. My life would be completely different."

"If I hadn't opened Café Colibri," says Leo, "I would still be working for someone else. I wouldn't be my own boss today."

"If I weren't so dedicated to medicine," says Omar, "I might have given up after the first exams. I wouldn't have worked through the nights."

"That's interesting," says the journalist. "You're mixing the past and the present."

"Life does that," says Maya. "The choices I made two years ago are why I am who I am today."

"If I were less principled," says Omar, "things would have been easier in the short term. But I wouldn't be where I am now."

"If I hadn't met all of you," says Priya quietly, "I'm not sure I would have survived my first year here."

The journalist pauses, looking around the café.

"This is a remarkable place," she says.

"If Leo hadn't had the courage to open it," says Maya, "none of us would be here."

"If you keep saying things like that," says Leo, "I'll never be able to run a normal café again."
