I Wish I Had Said Something
I wish & if only — regrets and desires. Late at Café Colibri, Maya and Leo trade their wishes: languages they don't speak, hours they don't have, things they wish they'd said.
📖 Reading: A Night of Wishes
It is late at Café Colibri. The café is closing. Leo is washing up, and Maya is on her third coffee, helping him clean.
"I wish I spoke Portuguese," Maya says suddenly. "I keep meeting Brazilian designers and I can't connect with them properly."
"If only I had more hours in the day," says Leo. "I wish I didn't need to sleep."
"I wish I had studied more languages when I was young," says Maya. "It's so much harder now."
"I wish I hadn't spent so much time worrying about the café opening," says Leo. "I was so stressed. If only I had known it would go well."
"I wish Omar would stop studying and come out with us more," says Maya.
"He can't help it," says Leo. "I wish I had his focus. I wish I could sit in one place for ten hours."
"If only this café were open twenty-four hours," says Maya. "I love it when it's just us."
"If only," echoes Leo, turning off the lights one by one.
"Leo," says Maya quietly, "I wish I'd had a café like this back in Taipei."
"You'll have one," says Leo with certainty. "Somewhere. Someday."
