If I Had Known, I Would Have Called
Third Conditional — hypothetical past situations and regrets. On a rainy Sunday at Café Colibri, the friends play 'what if?' and trace how every chance event led them here.
📖 Reading: What If?
On a rainy Sunday, the group at Café Colibri fell into a philosophical mood.
"If Jess hadn't called me that day," said Maya, "I would never have come to Toronto. My whole life would have been different."
"And if you hadn't come to Toronto," said Leo, "I would never have had my most loyal morning customer."
"If I hadn't come to this café on my first day," said Maya, "I wouldn't have met you. I would have been miserable that whole first month."
"If Omar hadn't lost that chess game last year," said Priya, "he wouldn't have started taking breaks from studying. He wouldn't have joined our Sunday group."
"That's true," admitted Omar. "If I had won every game, I would have become insufferable."
"If I hadn't trained for the half-marathon," said Priya, "I wouldn't have discovered how much I love running. It's changed everything."
"So every bad thing that happened led to something good?" asked Leo.
"Not exactly," said Maya carefully. "But if we hadn't gone through the hard parts, we wouldn't appreciate the good parts as much."
"That," said Leo, starting a fresh espresso, "is the wisest thing anyone has said in this café all year."

🎭 Dialogue: What Would Have Happened If…?
Omar asks Maya if she ever regrets the move. The answer: no — but a different Maya, in a parallel Taipei, would never have started freelancing or designed Café Colibri's menu.
Maya, do you ever regret coming to Toronto?
Never. But if I hadn't come, I'd have stayed in Taipei.
What would you have done there?
I would have kept working at the same agency. I would never have started freelancing.
And you wouldn't have met us.
Exactly. If Leo hadn't given me that list of shops, I might have given up in the first week.
If you had given up, who would have designed our café menu?
Ha! You would have had a very ugly menu, Leo.
