I'd Rather Stay and Talk
Would rather, would prefer, and expressing preferences. A quiet Sunday at Café Colibri turns into a debate: past or future, famous or respected, books or films.
📖 Reading: The Great Debate
Sunday afternoon. The café is quiet. The group has fallen into a debate about preferences.
"Would you rather live in the past or the future?" asks Priya.
"I'd rather live in the future," says Leo immediately. "More technology, more solutions to today's problems."
"I'd rather stay in the present, personally," says Maya. "I tend to think the grass is always greener elsewhere. But right here feels fine to me."
"I'd prefer not to choose," says Omar. "But if I had to — the past. I'd rather have lived in Renaissance Italy than anywhere else."
"Would you rather be famous or respected?" asks Maya.
"I'd rather be respected," says Priya without hesitation. "I'd prefer people to remember me for what I did, not who I was."
"I'd rather be famous," admits Leo. "But I'd prefer it to be because of the coffee."
"What about books versus films?" asks Omar, changing the subject.
"I'd rather read the book," say Maya and Priya at the same time.
"I'd rather watch the film," say Leo and Omar simultaneously.
"Some things," says Priya, "will never be resolved."

🎭 Dialogue: Would You Rather…?
Leo and Maya trade preference questions across the counter — and Maya admits, reluctantly, that she'd rather be here than in Taipei.
Would you rather be famous or respected, Maya?
I'd rather be respected, honestly. What about you?
I'd rather be both! But if I had to choose — famous. For the coffee.
Ha! Would you rather have more money or more time?
I'd rather have more time. Personally, money without time is meaningless.
I'd prefer more money, actually. Time I seem to have plenty of.
Really? Would you rather be in Taipei right now or here?
…here. I'd rather be here. Don't tell anyone I said that.
