By the Time She Arrived, It Had Already Started

Past Perfect — sequencing events in the past. Café Colibri's grand opening: delayed flights, a missed delivery time, and Omar in a tracksuit despite a smart-casual dress code.

📖 Reading: The Night of the Opening

It was the night of Café Colibri's grand opening. Leo had been preparing for months.

By the time the first guests arrived, Leo had already set up all the tables, prepared the menu, and briefed his staff.

However, things did not go entirely smoothly.

When the catering company arrived, Leo realised he had forgotten to confirm the delivery time. They had been waiting outside for twenty minutes.

Jess flew in from New York, but her flight had been delayed. By the time she arrived at the café, most guests had already had their first drinks.

"I'm so sorry," she said breathlessly. "I had no idea the traffic from the airport would be so bad."

"Don't worry," said Maya. "You hadn't missed anything important — Leo's speech is in ten minutes."

Omar arrived on time, but he had completely forgotten that the dress code was smart casual. He was wearing a tracksuit.

"Had you not read the invitation?" asked Priya with a laugh.

"I had read it," said Omar. "I just hadn't registered the dress code part."

Despite the small disasters, the evening was a great success. By midnight, Leo had served over a hundred guests, and the café had received its first five-star review online.
